Rating
I have had mine for about 3 years now and it works great. The directions that came with it eventually ended up in the composter. I suggest reading up on worm composting to get a better idea on how to use it. I put most of my food waste in it. I had to purchase a few more trays so that it would last the winter without emptying the trays. The worms don't like the cold. I highly recomend this. The great thing about this is that it so simple to maintain. I have left mine alone for a few months and in the spring there is always enough worms to start over. My gardens just love this stuff.

Rating
For what it is, this is a dependable composter. It sets up a bit like lincoln logs--it is simply a bunch of pressure treated boards with notches on each end that stack to make a square enclosure for composting. The bottom boards are different, to make the whole thing solid. Despite the fact that it isn't fastened with screw or nails, it holds together. It isn't particularly large, but it would be a good size for kitchen scraps and a small garden. It is also small/cheap enough to have two that you alternate between.

We have also used a black plastic composter (unfortunately we lost it in a few years ago in a move), which had advantages: it had a lid to keep out pests, and allowed the sun to help heat up the compost (and thus compost faster). They are also usually larger as well. Some cities give plastic compost bins away, and if you can get a free one it would be preferable. However, this is a nice cheap alternative if you aren't ready to build your own, and you don't want to spend $150 or more.

Very professional apparatus--it will make worm composting much easier and more hands off.

Note: It didn't come with the coir brick (as the instructions say it was supposed to), but I can get that at a local gardening store.

Rating
In 3 weeks, the worms have really demonstrated their appreciation of their new home. They are athletic - zooming around all over, eating well, and reproducing. It's convenient [except the top is drippy if you need to put it down somewhere] and is just what I was expecting. A word of caution though - the coir brick expands A LOT with water. Make sure you have a large container.

Rating
I have the five tray system an love the Worm Factory. The Worm Factory has been my most pleasant experience in raising worms. You absolutely can raise red wrigglers in a plastic tub. This system is better for many reasons. Unlike a plastic tub you tend to worry about this system staying too moist, as it trays help distribute the moisture. The worms can also navigate to the tray that they like best, whether they want to tunnel around in the food layer, or the more fiberous layers that you may have.

Another large benefit of this system is you do not need to worry when you harvest your castings. Simply stop feeding in one of the lower trays, and feed in the tray above it. This way the worms will move, and you will not have to worry about tossing out your worms and worm eggs when you harvest the castings into your garden.

I did a lot of reading up on this system, and since I live so far in the north I was looking for a system that could be odorless and be kept inside during the winter. This system is odorless. I really can't say enough about how well designed this system is, it really makes vermiculture easy.

This is a nicely designed and constructed crock for those who want to begin composting kitchen scraps but don't want an unsightly addition to their countertop, or don't want to deal with the potential smells. The charcoal filters are very effective at eliminating the odors of onions and other smelly scraps, last for a long time, and are very inexpensive to replace.

I really like this product. It sits near the kitchen sink where food peelings and leftover plated veggies can easily be tossed in. The carbon filter keeps the container odorless for days at a time and can be used for a month or more before a change is necessary. I dislike having to dump/empty the container and then wash out the remaining old product. A recyclable/reusuable filter (like a coffeemaker filter) would make this product a 5 star piece.

This is a great product for coffee grounds. I use mine for coffee grounds only and it's amazing how well my plants have responded to the grounds. It looks fine on the counter and there is no odor. Great way to start composting and you will be rewarded with healthier plants.

I have been using the Garden Gourmet, which is exactly like the 2 here on Amazon, for over 10 years. Same dimensions and same configuration. They are one of the sturdy ones I've tried. And I've tried over 50 composters. Only comment about an earlier comment is this unit is NOT intended for use with worms. This composter needs to reach at least 120 degrees (more like 140) for 21 days....Then unload the entire contents and seperate the ready from the fresh. Worms will not survive above +70 degrees.

On the assemble: It takes a little patience and pay attention to the instruction of the first two layers...They define the front opening, (vertical sliding door)and all those pieces need to SNAP into place to make it strong.

In bear or other country, You can use rebar or steel rods to anchor the four corners the bin,,,,,,,Just DON"T put meat in this bin and you should be fine.

Racoons are a pest..........Take a bungee cord to lock the top

Don't pay over $80.00

We use this container for the litter box packages and it woks wonderfully. There is no odor and we have a place for the kittie's used litter until we have a moment to remove it to the garbage. Love it...

The filters are wonderful. They keep odors from getting out of the kitchen crock and when I take the lid off the crock to put more scraps in, the scraps that are already in the kitchen crock still don't smell. The carbon filter absorbs all the orders..it's wonderful!!! The Kitchen crock is just what I needed also for my kitchen scraps for composting.

I have only had this product for a few weeks, but it was easy to put together. I had no problem assembleing this item. Once I completed the assemble, I filled it with up with yard waste. Each day I could see the pile sink as I added kitchen waste. So far I am pleased with this item, but reserve my final decesion until I need to use the composted dirt early this spring. On the downside, it is not easy to turn the compost pile due to the item being about 5ft. tall. If one does not need to turn the pile or has time to wait for the compose to turn to dirt, I think this will serve well.

I absolutely love my Kitchen Crock! It is large enough to hold a good amount of kitchen waste, yet small enough not to take up too much space on my kitchen counter; a carbon filter fits nicely in the lid to deal with any odors that might be present; the handle makes it easy to carry to the compost bin when it's full; and it cleans up wonderfully in the dishwasher... all that, AND it looks nice, too!
