Michigan Bulb & Co. - Merchant Review

The Michigan Bulb Company sells far more than just bulbs. They offer a wonderful variety of perennials, herbs and vegetables, trees, vines and a few houseplants. This is a fine thing, but the selections within the categories seem a little thin. Nonetheless, you can buy Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, Rembrandt tulips, Snow In Summer, or a Bag of Daffodils (75 bulbs for $30!), just to name a few things from the pages.

I found a purple and yellow fritallaria (on sale, no less!) to go with the purple and (mostly) yellow grape hyacinths I found on Dutch Gardens. I'll plant them near a forsythia bush and watch the blossoms outshine the sun! I liked shopping on this web site, and if the bulbs turn out decently, will shop there again.

The site is easy to use, with tabs across the top of the page, and plant choices listed by season on the left hand side. An interesting twist is a drop down list letting you choose plants by your soil type.

The Michigan Bulb Co. web site is laid out in the familiar 3 column format, but the designer obviously isn't color blind. A soothing background points up the color in the flower pictures, which are within reasonable scale of one another. There are a few garish entreaties for" best Buy!" and "buy One Get One Free!" but those are easily forgiven when you see the bargains that are only a click away.

You are going to have to go a very long way to get better prices than at Michigan Bulb Co. The Bag of Daffodils, for example, offers 75 bulbs for $.40 apiece. Even if the bulbs are small (@ 4 cm diameter), when you put out 75 of them the results will be spectacular. Not everyone needs specimen quality bulbs in a yard that is also home to kids, dogs, motorcycles and other family activities. At that price, I plan to put them out in my yard - and I rent!

Michigan Bulb Co. sets itself apart in the shipping department - all orders ship for a flat $6.95. This is a win-win deal if you make a huge order, and on a par with everyone else if your order is small.

It is necessary to point out that this Michigan Bulb Co. has arisen from the ashes of the bankruptcy of a previous Michigan Bulb Co. They state on their about Us page that there is no relationship between them and the previous business, and offer condolences but nothing else for the misfortune of those caught in the bankruptcy. One has to wonder why they kept the name if the legacy is so bad.

All this said, Michigan Bulb Co. will have to work extra hard and satisfy every customer every time in order to out live the old reputation. One assumes they will certainly try, and I hope they make it.
