Pansies - the monkey faces in your garden!
Pretty pansies - don't let the name fool you. Pansies are anything but shy, weak, or sensitive. In fact, they are one of the hardiest flowers of the bunch, and colorful too!
Pansies will bloom non-stop from spring to fall, and in certain southern portions of the United States(zones 6-9) will continue to bloom right though the winter as well. The lush, velvety pansy comes in just about any color you can imagine. Vivid purples, brilliant yellows, bright whites, and mellow blues are only a few of the vast color choices this special little flower has to offer. The blotches found on the face of each pansy come in a wide variety of colors as well. (bi-colors & tri-colors)
Pansies are typically grown as annuals or biennials. Pansies are low growing (6-8 inch) flowers that have five overlapping rounded and slightly frilled brilliantly colored petals. They appear to be very delicate, as their name might suggest but in reality are quite hardy. Because they are low growing they can be used for borders, edging, and they are an excellent choice for window boxes and pots for your outdoor patio. They will also make a dramatic statement if you fill an entire bed with blooms of a single color or a complementary theme (opposite colors on the color wheel). Purple and yellow pansies look great together!
Add a bold splash of color to a patio planter by planting little "Monkey faces"! My mom’s pansies offer an excellent example!
Additional tips for growing pansies:
-Pansies thrive in moist, well-drained soil that has been enriched with compost. -They prefer at least six hours of sun a day (full sun)
-Pansies can tolerate partial shade but complete shade is not recommended. -Frequently pinch faded flowers to encourage additional growth throughout the growing season. -Pansies are pollution tolerant.
-Pansies grow quickly, water regularly and fertilize once monthly.
-Pansies are edible and can be used to garnish desserts, cocktails, and salads.
The mild tasting petals make a beautiful addition to your table! Make sure to use pansies that have been grown without the use of pesticides.
