Snapdragons -pure and simple-
Snapdragons are hardy plants, branched stalks with flowers on spikes in very
showy bright colors. These sweet smelling old-fashioned favorites make excellent cut flowers.
To care for Snapdragons is an easy task. A snapdragon(Antirrhinum majus) flower best
in full sun or light shade and should be planted in rich well drained soil.
Prepare the soil by breaking up large clumps of soil and amending heavy soils with
compost or peat moss. The root system is quite fine and can easily be damaged by deep
cultivation. A layer of organic mulch around the plants will conserve moisture as well
as prevent weed growth.
A well grown tall snapdragon is a favorite for colorful beds and borders. Huge flower
spikes are covered with florets in shades of purple, pink, red, orange, yellow and white.
It is an exceptional cut flower and always a hit with children and till today its appealing
for me to touch these flowers....no clue why.
Blooms depends on where you live, but you
can expect them to bloom at early summer to frost. If you have grown them from seed
transplant it to your garden after the last frost.
Give them a try in your annual garden this year and enjoy these colorful flowers.
For bushier growth, pinch back young plants.
Keep water off leaves.
Fertilize monthly.
Remove faded blossoms to prolong flowering
